Hakim Workineh and Melaku Beyan in Society.
This society was found (established) in 2010 by Ethiopian doctors and allied health care
professionals residing in North America. Its founding principles include supporting the health
care services and Medical education in Ethiopia. It is named after two Pioneer physicians,
Hakim Workineh and Melaku Beyan.
From its inception the society’s missions are well outlined as follows. 1. To build a lasting
relationship and net work, of medical Doctors and allied health professionals residing in North
America. 2. To promote understanding and knowledge base (regarding )developments in the
field of medicine in Ethiopia 3 To explore avenues to contribute towards improving Ethiopia’s
health care system and médical institutions. 4. Define action plan and help to transfer the
knowledge in technologies, in the field of medicine. With these principles in mind this society
has been functioning for more than a decade.
It is a nonprofit organization registered in the state of New York, primarily supported by
contributions from members. Our organization has provided financial support (scholarship) and
material support to medical students at the Bahir Dar School of medicine and Health Sciences
for over ten years. The scholarship selection criteria are based on academic performance
(merit), and the needs of the students. We also supported distance learning programs to
promote leadership in health, and especially for faculty and senior students, in this medical
school.
The society has been recognizing and Honoring outstanding clinicians and medical educators
for their exemplary contributions in advancing medical education and practice. Beyond
acknowledging these outstanding colleagues, we believe that such recognition will encourage
today’s health care providers to follow in their footsteps! The Luminaries recognized todate

We have established “Professor Edemariam Tsega, annual achievement award” for the best
(outstanding) graduate in Bahir Dar University’s School of Medicine and Health sciences.
The Society has been providing financial support during COVID-19 pandemic and other social
crisis that surfaced out in Ethiopia.
Recently, we have established relationship with Ambo University with a goal of exploring areas
of cooperation that promotes academic excellence.
We believe that history of medicine in Ethiopia in general and history of the giants that
pioneered the growth of modern medicine merits further exploration! There is a lot to be learned.
There is a lot to be told about their lives and the lives they have touched!
